Clipper Trust

January 21st, 2010 | Published under My Stuff | No Comments

If you read my blog Maiden Voyage mid-last year, you’ll recall that my neighbor is a captain of freight ships.  Last Tuesday, he was once again having a party aboard a ship, this one the Clipper Trust.  The party was celebrating the end of a lengthy contract with CSR Sugar. I was invited and once again gladly attended.

We were given a tour of the ship, and it was amazing to see the living quarters, engine room, control rooms and the decks of the ship seeing the cranes and huge storage pits of sugar. The ship transports massive amounts of sugar from Queensland which is then taken back to Melbourne and removed by crane to CSR when it docks. You’ll see in the photos one of the cranes taking sugar from the pits. There are 5 pits all up like this and constant unloading them by crane takes 44 hours to empty (times that by 5 for each pit). CSR Sugar is the factory located right next to the ship, and you can see conveyer belts which transport it inside.

This ship was docked in a fantastic location where you could see the bay into Melbourne. It also gave a great view of the whole length of the Westgate Bridge. It’s not every day you get a view as fantastic as this, right in the bay with the land surrounding you. Although I ended up with over 100 pictures, here’s my favorite 10 from the night.
